David Collopy
is one of the most experienced opera producers in Ireland. Having
held the senior management positions in both Opera Ireland and Wexford
Festival Opera he has produced over one hundred main-scale operas
and presented countless recitals and concerts in Ireland and abroad.
He has worked with such artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo
and Jose Carerras in concert and presented opera performances in
all parts of Ireland, the United Kingdom and Germany.
David Collopy started his professional
career in cultural administration when he joined Wexford Festival
Opera as their Senior Administrative Officer after practicing accountancy
for five years. In the mid 80's he worked for a brief period in
London as Financial Controller in a design company before returning
to Dublin to take on the new post of Administrator of the D.G.O.S.,
later to become known as Opera Ireland. During his twenty-one year
tenure with the organisation he has held the positions of General
Manager, Executive Director and Chief Executive, the latter post
he held for five years.
He was a principal driver in the
creation of the touring company 'Co-Opera' which brought classic
productions to many parts of Ireland for the first time and took
the first ever opera production to the Faroe Islands. He oversaw
the first ever international tour of the main company to the prestigious
Maifestspiele ( May Festival ) in Wiesbaden, Germany in 2005 and
his last major project as CEO for Opera Ireland, saw the work of
prisoners of a high-security jail in Italy ( Maiano ) and Dublin's
Mountjoy Jail collaborating on the design and scenic fabrication
for Puccini's La Boheme in November 2006.
During his time as CEO with Opera
Ireland he worked with many prominent corporate clients such as
: Bank of Ireland, AIB Group, LUAS, The Irish Times, Davy Stockbrokers,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, BMW, McCann FitzGerald, KPMG and The Merrion
Hotel.
He has broadcast on RTE, BBC and
ARTE and has addressed opera conventions and forums in the United
States of America, Germany and France. He is a member of the Marketing
Institute of Ireland.
